Shadowing means listening to English and speaking at the same time, like a shadow following a person. You don’t wait. You listen and repeat immediately, copying the sound, rhythm, and intonation. It’s like singing along to your favorite song, but with English sentences. Now let’s go through 5 tips to make shadowing work for you.

 

Many learners make a big mistake. They try to repeat too quickly. Before you repeat, you must listen carefully, notice the rhythm, stress, and pauses.

Example: The sentence is: ‘I can’t believe it’s already Friday!’. First, just listen to it. Again: ‘I can’t believe it’s already Friday!’

Now, repeat after me! Slowly!. “I can’t believe it’s already Friday!”
Now, faster!  ‘I can’t believe it’s already Friday!’

Great job!”

Don’t begin with long or difficult sentences. Shadowing is about accuracy, not speed. Start with short, easy sentences. Then slowly move to longer ones.

 

Example short: “How are you today?”. Say it with me slowly: “How are you today?”
Now, faster: “How are you today?”

Good!

Now, start with a longer sentence: “I’ve been waiting for this moment all week!”
First, slow! ‘I’ve been waiting for this moment all week!’
Now faster: ‘I’ve been waiting for this moment all week!’
Perfect!

 

When you shadow, don’t worry too much about every single word. Focus on the music of English, the sound, stress, and flow.

 

Example: “What do you wanna do tomorrow?”. Listen: native speakers say ‘Whaddya wanna do tomorrow?’
It sounds different, right?
Repeat after me slowly: ‘What do you wanna do tomorrow?’

At first, it’s okay to use subtitles. They help you connect sound and text. But don’t depend on them for too long.

 

Step 1: Watch with subtitles.

Now, faster: ‘It’s such a beautiful day outside.’

 

Step 2: Now turn off subtitles. Just listen and shadow. Slowly: ‘It’s such a beautiful day outside’.
