An overview of IELTS Reading
IELTS Reading includes 3 passages, 40 questions in different formats and exam time is 60 minutes. This is a difficult test, requiring you to know the test structure, tactics, and tips beside grammar, vocabulary and background knowledge, so that you can achieve Band 9.0.

IELTS Reading score
For each correct answer, you will get 1 score and this is called raw score. The total score will be converted to the official IELTS score. For example, if you answer 10 - 12 questions correctly, your conversion score is 4.0 (Band 4.0) or if you answer 27 - 29 questions correctly, your conversion score is 6.5 (Band 6.5) and if you answer correct 39 - 40 questions, your conversion score is 9.0 (Band 9.0).

Tip 1: Don't try to understand everything in your reading!
When practicing IELTS Reading in class or at home, you have time to look up the dictionary, but when taking the test you are not allowed to do this. So you get confused and keep trying to find the meaning of words you don't know. This is just useless because if you don't know the meaning of the word, no matter what you do, you won't know. Therefore, what you need to do is look at the words and sentences around it to guess its meaning or you don't care about that word. You don't need to know all the meanings of words. You should only focus on words related to the questions and don't worry about words you don't understand.

Tips for IELTS Reading

Tip 2: Read the exam requirements and instructions carefully.
Each group of questions in the IELTS Reading has different requirements. Therefore, you must read the question carefully to answer correctly. For example, the question asks “Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS”. This means you will have to choose a maximum of 2 words. If you choose more than 02 words you will lose points even though you get the right idea.

Tip 3: Control your test-taking time.
As you know, 40 questions spread over 03 reading passages with 60 minutes. Thus, each passage you read, answering is 20 minutes. If you do not control the time, you cannot complete the 40 questions on time. Therefore, you should control your time by doing the easy questions first, and the difficult ones later. An easy question is one that you can answer immediately after reading it without wasting much time. Difficult questions are more challenging and require you to invest more time. It is reasonable to save time on easy questions to invest in difficult questions.

As you know, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a four-skill test: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Questions in each section are designed to assess and evaluate that specific skill. For this reason, if you want to get a good score, you will need to set up a separate study plan for each section since every section will have different question types:

In the reading section, you will read three passages and answer 40 questions.
In the listening section, you will have to answer 40 questions from the audio file that you listen to once.
In the writing section, you will have to write two tasks about the assigned topic.
In the speaking section, you will talk and discuss given topics with an examiner.

1. Study and prepare vocabulary:
Using new words frequently will help you to learn to speak English fluently. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to make a word part of your daily speech. Below is what you need to do:

- Record expressions that can be used in a variety of academic contexts.
- Record phrases (rather than individual words).
- Use a good monolingual dictionary to check proper word arrangement.
- Avoid spending too much learning highly specialized words.
- Record useful expressions related to these topics.
- Practice talking and writing about them in English.
- Use newspapers, magazines and news websites to learn more.

2. Read, read and read as much as possible:
You need to have a credible English-English dictionary and work out the meanings of new words, making sure that you do not translate back to your language. Below is what you need to do:

- Skim and scan to form a general picture of a text quickly.
- Make sure you know exactly what’s required for each task.
- Check all instructions carefully.
- Use the work for further clues about the content and organization of the text.

5. Practice your listening skills:
You can listen to the news in English every morning and try to write them down and analyze later. The following are tips on how to prepare for listening skills.

- Use the preparation time to think about the task content and focus.
- Make sure you know exactly what’s required for each task and check the instructions.
- After checking your answers, listen again, and try to work out the cause of any problem.

How to improve:
- Remember that you only hear the recording once. Don’t pause the CD when you’re practicing.
- Finally, listen once more to the tapescript and highlight useful expressions.

Learning IELTS Test Format With BIET Center

Would you like to get high score with IELTS certificate? But do you know what the IELTS test format consists of? Let's learn this with BIET Center!

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) evaluates you on all four language skills - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The total test time is 2 hour 44 minutes plus 10 minutes of transfer time. The Listening (L), Reading (R), and Writing (W) components of the test are always completed immediately after each other and with no break. You will do the Listening component first followed by the Reading and Writing components of the test. Depending on the test centre, the Speaking test may be taken up to 7 days either before or after the test date.

There is no difference in the content, format or level of difficulty and scoring between IELTS General Training and Academic examination. The listening and speaking tests remain the same for both the versions.

IELTS Listening test (30 minutes)
You will have to listen to four recordings and then answer the questions asked. The recordings are of native English speakers and the duration of the test is 30 minutes.
Recording 1:
You will listen to a dialogue placed in daily life and context.
Recording 2:
You will listen to a monologue about everyday life or social context. For instance, a talk on the condition of streets in an area.
Recording 3:
You will listen to a conversation between more than two people placed in a training or educational context. For instance, a teacher discussing an assignment with students.
Recording 4:
You will listen to a monologue on any academic subject. For instance, a college lecture.
In your Listening test, you will be assessed on your ability to comprehend the ideas, facts, attitudes and opinions of the speakers, the purpose of the recording and how well you follow the development of ideas.

IELTS Reading test (60 minutes)
The IELTS Reading test requires you to answer 40 questions and is designed to test you on an array of reading skills. You would have to read for gist, main ideas, details, logical arguments, skimming, and figuring out the writers’ attitudes, opinions and intentions.

The Reading test for Academic module consists of three long texts which can be descriptive, factual and analytical. The texts are taken from magazines, books, newspapers or journals and are apt for individuals who want to pursue university education or professional registration overseas.

Excerpts in the Reading test for General Training module are taken from the newspaper, books, notices, company handbooks, advertisements and magazines. You need to read them well to answer the questions that follow.

IELTS Writing test (60 minutes)
The IELTS writing test requires you to complete two tasks and covers topics of general interest based on the module you are taking.

IELTS Academic comprises topics suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students
Task 1: There will be a table, chart, graph or diagram that you will have to describe, explain or summarise in your own words. You might also be asked to explain the data shown, and stages and working of a process.

Task 2: You will have to write an essay as a response to an argument, problem or opinion. Make sure you respond to both tasks in formal style.

IELTS General Training module consists of excerpts on general topics from books, magazines, notices, company handbooks and guidelines that you are likely to face on a regular basis in an English speaking environment

Task 1: You will have to write a letter to request information on, or explaining the given situation. You may choose to write it informally or formally.

Task 2: You will have to write an essay as a response to an argument, problem or opinion. You may choose to write it in informal style.

IELTS Speaking Test (11-14 minutes)
The IELTS Speaking test assesses your spoken English skills. The test is recorded and conducted in three parts.
Part 1:
You are asked questions about yourself and generic topics like family, home, work, interests and studies. This takes about 4-5 minutes.
Part 2:
You are given a card with a topic written on it. You have to talk on this topic for about two minutes and will have a minute to prepare before you start speaking. The examiner will also ask a few related questions on the topic allotted.
Part 3:
In speaking part 3, the examiner will ask a broader range of questions based on the toptic that you had in speaking part 2. The questions require you to expand your answers further with explanation and examples of the world in general. The examiner will strictly control the time.

1. Incorrect grammar structure: Messy sentences or lacking of auxiliary components.
Many of you do not know well English grammar due to subjective study or basic loss, so the sentences you write are grammartically incorrect or confused, it means that you write them in sentimental way, like Vietnamese. Word phrases or compound words look like a sentence but actually it is not a complete and grammartically correct sentence. For example, you should not write “She was exhausted. She stared at the page. she was unable to comprehend a single word” but you should write “Exhausted, she stared at the page, was unable to comprehend a single word”.

4. Subject and verb are inconsistent.
The harmony between the subject and the verb in the sentence is very important but many of you kame this mistake, especially complex sentences that have complex structures with many subjects and relative length. For example, you should not write “When he arrived at the furniture shop, they had been sold the table he wanted” but you should write “When he arrived at the furniture shop, they had sold the table he wanted”.

03 Important Things Candidates Must Know Well Before The IELTS Test Day

With the experience of teaching and practicing IELTS for many students who got high scores in IELTS, BIET Language Center offers three-stage advice that candidates must know well before the day of IELTS test.

I. One Month Before The Test:
   1. Practice how to manage IELTS Writing time:
If you want to take the initiative in IELTS Writing, you, first, master the time. Concentrate highly on it, and you yourself practice writing with strict time so that you can get used to the speed in the exam room.
      • At IDP, task 1 and task 2 are required to present on two different sheets of paper. So, please note and don’t write the wrong order of sheets.
      • For task 2: Try to take 10 minutes to make an outline. Then, write constantly. Many of you do not make an outline for the fear of spending those 10 minutes and then the time pressure, the psychology will make you forget what you are going to write.

03 important things candidates must know well before the IELTS exam

2. Get used to Answer Sheet:
One month before the exam is the best time for you to focus on solving the exam, practice like taking the real exam. However, instead of writing your answers on a draft notebook, you should write your answers on the Answer sheet for Listening & Reading and Answer Sheet for Writing so that you won’t be surprised when you take the exam. Many people who enter the exam room do not know how to fill out these Answer Sheet (Where to fill in the full name, registration number or blacken some more boxes, …).

3. Systematize the knowledge:
The mistakes candidates often make is the closer the exam is, the more new knowledge they need to cram. The fact that you will get better results when you are confident in what you have already known compared to worrying about what you have not known yet.

Take this valuable time to systematize all knowledge you have accumulated, evenly distribute a common topic every day to practice Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing with fixed time line in the exam room. * Some notes when you pratice at home:
With the Speaking part
     • Speak logically and clearly.
     • Pronounce correctly.
     • Answer the examiner’s questions correctly.
     • Do not answer shortly.
    • Keep in a good mood when responding to the examiner. The confident answer is also one of the factors the examiner concerns in the Speaking part.

What need to do before the IELTS exam

With the Listening section.
• Do not hesitate in one sentence! Be assertive!: Fill in or not. If you hesitate, you may lose points for the next sentences.
• Pay attention to the pronunciation of the person’s name. For example, when you hear a section that has a person’s name is WILSON, do not rush to fill it out but listen to the spelling right after. Many of you are too confident in filling in before listeing to the spelling so you write WILSHAN. Therefore, you fill out wrongly and lose points.

With the Reading passage.
• Read the passage carefully.
• For the TRUE/ FALSE or YES/ NO and NOT GIVEN answers. Specify as required, absolutely do not write T/F or Y/N or NG.

With the Writing task.
     • At IDP, task 1 and task 2 are required to present on two different sheets of paper. So, please note and don’t write the wrong order of sheets.
     • For task 2: Try to take 10 minutes to make an outline. Then, write constantly.
     • Complete the writing essay with Introduction – body – conclusion.

II. On the exam day:
1. Bring all necessary documents:
The important documents such as Passport or identity card need to be checked and stored carefully because if there are any errors in information or you forrget to them, you will not be allowed to take the IELTS exam.

All four sections of the IELTS test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking have time limit without extra minutes. So, make sure you know the time well before the exam begins so you can continually check, master and divide the time appropriately for the reading and writing tests. Avoid the “race” with time or fear of running out of time.

   2. Come to the IELTS test early:
You should find the way to the exam room before the exam day to avoid getting lost. On the exam day, arrive at least 30 minutes early to make sure that you have enough time to complete the procedures before entering the exam room such as checking papers, check-in, security, …

   3. Listen for instructions:
Despite knowing the IELTS structures and the requirements for doing the test, you must absolutely listen to and follow the instructions from the proctor. Do not uncover an unauthorized part, do not do anything if the proctor doesn’t request or allow it. Be careful with the items that say “answers should be not more than two words, or answers should not be more than a word or a number…” If you carelessly fill in more than one word, you will immediately be deducted points.

   4. Prepare a strong mentality:
Be calm, take advantage of every moment, focus on the task. You will take the Listening exam first and Listening skill requires a high concentration. Losing your temper will make you miss many sentences and make unfortunate mistakes. Bạn sẽ thi Listening trước và kỹ năng listening đòi hỏi một sự tập trung cao độ. Do not lose many sentences just because of one sentence. Therefore, focus on and flow the audio.

   5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions:
If you have any questions or are unsure about the filling process of information, time, topic, … don’t be afraid to ask questions to get help from the proctor. On the exam day, there is no “I think”, … Make sure you understand the rules and the process for the exam to take place successfully.

III. Some Notes After The Exam:
1. When you register for the IELTS test at IDP or British Council, the IELTS certificate will be provided and received at the center where you take the exam. You only bring your identity card or passport to the center to compare with the original file to get the certificate. For the candidates who live in other provinces, the result will be sent home freely by the center.

2. Normally, about two weeks after the test date, the result will be reported to the candidate. The result will announced directly at the center you have registered for the exam. Candidates who want to get the result at the center must bring the identification documents such as ID card or passport to get it.

3. Time to get IELTS result on paper is 13 days. Time to get IELTS result on computer is 5 - 7 days. So, those who need IELTS quickly can choose the test on computer.

4. Those who wish to take the IELTS test result home will need to notify the center at the time of speaking test. Then, based on the address provided on the application form, the center will send the result home to the candidates.

Getting IELTS 7.0 from Zero within 90 days with BIET Language Center in Nha Trang

Khánh Thy Nguyen Ngoc got IELTS 7.0 with BIET Language Center in Nha Trang city easily from Zero within 90 days. Why could she do this?

Our teachers built a 90 – day study itinerary with 03 hours a day for her and drilled directly on IELTS booklets issued before.

The first 30 days: She studied English pronunication, grammar and the mass of vocabularies, Listening – Speaking method. In the progress of studying grammar and vocabularies, she practised speaking to remember fomulas, vocabularies and standardized English pronunciation as well as fluency. Without them, she couldn’t do anything with IELTS. After studying the Listening method, she was guided the concrete listening ways via each conversation or talk with sound – linking, intonation, … by teachers, and then she practised retelling the story she had just listened to. Gradually, she could report the story she had listened to after listening. The first 30 days passed, she had English basic foundation for IELTS preparation.

The, she practised writing and teachers corrected by analyzing the right or wrong points and wrote it again until it was ok. Regarding Task 2, teachers also guided her the layout, provided with linking words or phrases, knowwledge for each topic and she practised writing and teachers corected, supplemented it for her until her writing was good. For Speaking skill, teachers guided and provided with knowledge, showed her the way to compose and she practised each part until she could speak English fluently.

The final 30 days: Teachers also guided her like what they did in the last 30 days but with more difficult and advanced level. And she kept on practising and she finally got IELTS 7.0 as she and her family expected.
