LESS FOREIGN LANGUAGE MAKES VIETNAM’S STUDENTS LOSE WORKING OPPORTUNITY AND LAG FOREVER

“THE FIRST ONE IS FOREIGN LANGUAGE, THE SECOND ONE IS INFORMATICS” is always “thinking” of any students before graduating. This shows that Vietnam’s students are aware of foreign language importance. Many new graduates, however, are soon weeded out the recruitment because of poor foreign language, especially English.

Being a fresher, Xuan Lan – Nha Trang University student – asked her parents for money to register for an English class at a Language Center that is near her university. After 4 years at univeristy and 3 years of studying and practicsing English, she got C National English Certificate. After graduating from university, she applied for a job but she did not know why she was always refused by the employers. It turned out that her C level certificate was the result of paying the money for that, her knowledge was not equivalent to what shown in her certificate.

Some other students didn’t have English certificate or had Ennglish certificate bought were also refused because they could not communicate in English. A few students luckily passed the recruiment without English testing. However, they could not complete their task during the working time because they could not speak English.

Mr. Nguyen Vinh Hiep – the Director of Tan Viet Development and Investment Ltd. Co. said that his company need a person who could do office work and transaction in English but he could not find a suitable person. This work was not difficult but finding a person who could meet this task was very difficult. Many students came to his company but nobody could do this, so  he asked some freelances to do this for him.

Now, the number of students get jobless more and more every year because their foreign languages are remedial, fully English. The labor force market of post – WTO gives the youth many opportunities but it is challenging. If they don’t have enough capicity to compete, the young labor force of Vietnam
will be soon eliminated. Working opportunity is only for those who are active, confident to get knowledge, to be good at informatics, to be  proficient in foreign language, especially English.
